Bible Lesson

Discussion Questions

• What’s something nice someone has done for you?
• What did Jesus do for Judas and the other disciples in our Bible Adventure story? (Washed their feet.)
• What do you think being a “servant” means? (Helping others, being kind to them, or doing nice things for them.)

Memory Verse

Work on this bible memory verse with your kids each week.  We will be figuring out a way to get a prize to each child who memorizes this verse by the end of this series.

This is a Tuba.  Let’s learn how to play this instrument and what it sounds like and then let’s pretend to play our own.

Listen and play along as long as you and your child would like to..

Parent Say:

Great job playing your tubas.  We’re going to play a game next.

Hands-On Activity

Activity 1 (Supplies Needed: plastic egg or ball and something to make a line)
Tape two parallel lines on the floor about five feet apart (or whatever you have at home; be creative).  Have your child stand on a line and you or another sibling stand on the other.  Tell them to try to toss the plastic egg (ball or whatever you have that works) to the person across from them. If they drop it, they can pick it up and try again.

The Point: That game took some teamwork. Jesus loved and served others, even when they weren’t nice to Him. He showed us that it’s important to work with other people, because God loves them all!

Activity 2
Whenever we are kind to others, help them, or do good things for them, we are serving. It can be fun to think of ways to serve others, like our family, friends, and neighbors! We’re going to look at a few pictures, and I’ll give you a way we could serve them. Give me a thumbs-up if that’s a good way to serve, and a thumbs down if it’s not a good thing to do for someone else. Ready?

This is a picture of a family. Could you serve your grown-ups, brothers, and sisters, by making a big mess, and not cleaning it up? Give me a thumbs up if that’s a good way to serve, and a thumbs down if it’s not a good idea. That’s a thumbs-down, what could we do instead? How about cleaning up your toys and games without being asked? Show me a thumbs up if that’s a good way to serve, and a thumbs down if it isn’t a good way to serve. Thumbs up, yes, keeping our homes clean is a great way to serve our families.

Firefighters and police officers serve people every day, but how could we serve them? Would writing them a note to say “Thank you” be a good way of serving them? Thumbs up, yes! Telling someone thank you is a great way to be kind to them. We can thank a lot of people, firefighters, police officers, teachers, our grown-ups, and so many other people that do nice things for us.

We can serve the people we live near, our neighbors, too! Could we serve by helping our grown-ups make a meal or some treats and bringing it to our neighbors? YES! That’s a thumbs-up, giving nice things to our neighbors is a great way to serve others.

We all can be fantastic at serving others. Look for ways you can be kind and serve people this week! The more we practice serving, the more fun it will be!

Pray With Your Child

Dear God, we love you. Thank you for loving us. Help us to show others how much you love them. Amen.

After you pray together tell your child that we have one more thing to do.

Let’s find out what it is!

A Message from Elizabeth for the Baxter Campus Kidventure Kids

About This Series:

Have you ever met someone who you had seen on stage or in a movie? Were they who you expected them to be? In this series, we’re going to look at the way God’s Son Jesus acted when He wasn’t in the spotlight. We’ll see why so many people have decided to follow Jesus and learn some unexpected things about Him along the way.

Bible Memory Verse

Work on this bible memory verse with your kids each week.  We will be figuring out a way to get a prize to each child who memorizes this verse by the end of this series.

2 Corinthians 5:17
When anyone lives in Christ (Point up.)
the new creation has come. (Point down)
The old is gone. (Thumbs pointing back over shoulders)
The new is here! (Point down)

The Big Idea for Today's Lesson Is:

Jesus Shows Us What Love Is

Lesson 4: Dinner

You may have heard that Jesus loves you, but what does that mean? On one of the most difficult nights of His life, Jesus took some extra time to show how powerful His love is, even for His enemies.

Video Lesson

Watch the video then do the activities that follow.

Discussion Questions

Ask these questions after the 1st segment of The Source.

• What do you think Gabby should do to fix the problem with Mr. Dole?
• How do you think the Source team could show love to Mr. Dole? (be kind to him, write good things about him, talk to him.)
• Have you ever had to tell someone “I forgive you”? What happened?

Hands-On Activity

Supplies Needed:  Small cup, large cup, water

Look Up and Read: Luke 7:40-43. In these verses, Jesus is telling a story. He wants to make the point that the bigger thing someone is forgiven for, the more thankful they will be, and the more loved they will feel.

Discuss: How do you think the people in that story felt? What do you think Jesus was trying to say?

Do This: Show them the small cup, large cup, and bottle of water. Pour water into the cups as you talk about them.

Say This: Each of these can hold a different amount of water. The small cup can hold only a tiny bit.  The larger cup can hold much more. Which one represents the person who is forgiven little?  Which one the person who was forgiven much?

The Point: The more we talk to God and ask Him to forgive us when we do wrong things, the more we’ll be filled by His love, and then we’ll be able to give that love to other people.

Discuss: What might happen if you chose to love someone you didn’t get along with? (They might change, but you might see them in a new way, too!)

Return to Video:  Now watch the remainder of The Source video until the end when Rue comes back on to conclude the video with a bible lesson component.

Second Segment of The Source

Final Questions for this Lesson

Questions The Source 2nd segment:

  1. Who was featured in the current edition of The Source? (Mr. Dole)
  2. What did Gabby learn about him? (Good things: funny, gave up comedy to be a teacher.  Not so good: he was maybe making fun of Bowie)
  3. What was Gabby supposed to do and what does it look like she will do? (Make some positive changes about Mr. Dole for the article, but instead we are left thinking that she is going to do the opposite.)

Questions from Today’s Bible Story:

  • What job did Jesus do that was normally a job for servants? (Wash feet)
  • Who did Jesus show love to? (The disciples & Judas even though he knew Judas meant to cause him harm.)
  • What is love? (Doing what is good for someone else, putting someone 1st)

Jesus Shows Us What Love Is!

Final Discussion Question:  What are some ways that we can serve others and show them love this next week?

You can find the Bible story that Rue told in John 13:1-17 for extra reading as a family.
